Google Lowers Follower Requirements for Search Profiles to Support Smaller Creators

Google has significantly reduced the follower thresholds for creating a search profile, allowing a wider range of creators to establish an official presence on Google Search and Discover. The eligibility requirements for YouTube, Instagram, and X have been lowered from 100,000 to 35,000 followers.

Expanded Eligibility and Scope for Search Profiles

On August 12, Google announced an update to its search profile operating policy, detailing a reduction in follower requirements across major platforms. With this change, users on YouTube, Instagram, and X can now qualify for a search profile with 35,000 followers, a roughly 65% decrease from the previous threshold. For TikTok creators, the requirement has been adjusted from 300,000 to 100,000 followers.

Search profiles allow creators to showcase content and activity from multiple platforms in a single, integrated view within Google Search. The service is currently limited to the United States, with plans for a gradual international rollout. To create a profile, users must be at least 18 years old and remain in compliance with Google’s community guidelines.

Data-Driven Content Strategy and the Role of Search Console

This policy update is part of a broader strategic effort to expand Google's infrastructure for creators. In July, Google introduced 'Platform Properties' in Google Search Console, a feature that allows creators to track the performance of social media content even without an owning website. This tool provides creators with direct access to metrics such as impressions, clicks, and popular search queries originating from Google Search and Discover.

These insights provide a crucial feedback loop, helping creators understand how their content performs within the Google ecosystem beyond their primary platforms. While Google clarifies that search profiles are not a direct search engine optimization (SEO) tool for boosting rankings, building a profile increases the likelihood of a creator's content appearing in users' Discover feeds once followers engage.

Integrating Advertising Ecosystems and Creator Discovery

Google’s initiative also aims to strengthen ties with the advertising market. Within Google Ads, a YouTube creator partnership feature is already available globally, enabling marketers to search for and evaluate creators based on follower size and activity metrics.

The advancement of search profiles and Search Console ultimately creates a more transparent, data-driven partnership environment for advertisers. For creators, these tools help reduce platform dependency and provide an opportunity to manage their brand influence directly within the world’s largest search engine.
