ByteDance, the parent company of video platform TikTok, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Motion Picture Association (MPA) concerning artificial intelligence (AI)-generated content. This agreement primarily aims to establish robust safeguards for the intellectual property (IP) of celebrities and franchises, addressing concerns from Hollywood studios regarding the proliferation of AI deepfake content on TikTok. It marks a crucial step toward finding a balance between advancing AI technology and protecting creators' rights.
IP Protection Agreement Signed Amid Hollywood Concerns
The signing of this Memorandum of Understanding between ByteDance and the MPA stems from a cease-and-desist letter the MPA sent to TikTok in February. At that time, the MPA voiced strong concerns over the prevalence of deepfake videos on TikTok, featuring popular culture characters and actors generated by ByteDance's AI model, Seedance. Deepfake videos depicting Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt, in particular, were highlighted as prominent examples of intellectual property infringement within Hollywood.
The MPA had previously demanded that ByteDance cease using Hollywood intellectual property to train its AI models. In response, ByteDance has agreed through the MOU to cooperate with major studios, coordinating technological innovation and upholding 'robust safeguards' for IP protection. Charles Rivkin, Chairman and CEO of the MPA, stated, "This agreement reinforces our commitment to protecting creative content and underscores that copyright is the bedrock of the film and television industry."
ByteDance's AI Technology and Intellectual Property Management
Under this agreement, ByteDance plans to implement intellectual property protection measures leveraging technological advancements integrated into its latest generative AI models, 'Seedream 5.0 Pro' and 'Seedance 2.5.' ByteDance will collaborate with the MPA to continuously integrate these models into applications such as TikTok, CapCut, and the US-based TikTok USDS Joint Venture.
