The Walt Disney Company and TikTok have announced a global partnership in creator content, signaling a new direction for the entertainment industry. This collaboration will allow creators to produce short-form videos utilizing Disney's extensive film and TV library assets. These creations will be showcased across both TikTok and the Disney+ platform. Initially, the initiative will pilot in the U.S. market, with plans for a global expansion.

Creating Short-Form Content Using Disney IP

Through this partnership, creators interested in participating will gain access to intellectual property (IP) assets spanning hundreds of Disney titles, including those from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and FX, to produce short-form videos. The content created will be unveiled on 'Verts,' the short-form feed launched by TikTok and Disney+ in March. Disney stated its commitment to regularly updating content to encourage ongoing fan engagement.

The two companies are also launching the 'Disney Creator Ambassador Program,' a jointly operated initiative for top-tier creators. This program will offer creators compensation, increased visibility, exclusive event participation opportunities, and career development pathways.

Josh D'Amaro's Creator-Centric Strategy

This significant deal with TikTok marks one of the first major initiatives under Josh D'Amaro, who assumed the role of CEO in March. In his inaugural earnings announcement, CEO D'Amaro emphasized that 'Verts' fosters deep engagement with Disney IP. He outlined plans to expand collaboration with creators to ensure Disney IP is appropriately showcased on social platforms. This strategy aligns with the company's emphasis on the 'Creator Collection,' a separate catalog of horizontally distributed creator content available through Disney+ and Hulu.

Disney's move is interpreted as an acknowledgment of the growing influence of creator-centric social media. Citing internal TikTok data, Disney revealed that an average of 6.5 million movie and TV-related posts were shared daily on TikTok last year, with nearly half of survey respondents watching relevant films or shows on streaming services after discovering content on TikTok. This also represents a strategic shift for Disney, which had withdrawn plans for an AI video creation partnership with OpenAI involving the AI video tool 'Sora' last December.

Synergistic Effects for Disney+ and TikTok

Both Disney and TikTok anticipate synergistic benefits from this partnership, leveraging their respective strengths. Asad Ayaz, Chief Marketing and Brand Officer for The Walt Disney Company, stated that the collaboration builds a new bridge between the stories Disney tells and the creativity they inspire, offering creators a larger stage and viewers daily opportunities to discover more Disney+ content. Dan Yang, TikTok's Global Head of Entertainment, added that creators are at the heart of everything on TikTok, and working with Disney will bring genuine creator expression from the TikTok community to Disney+, fostering shared creativity that strengthens fandom.

Currently, Disney+ boasts approximately 130 million subscribers worldwide. According to Nielsen data, it was the third most-watched streaming service in the U.S. in May, accounting for about 5% of total viewing time. While the financial terms of the TikTok partnership were not disclosed, it is expected to positively impact Disney+'s subscriber retention and acquisition.
