Global short-form video platform TikTok is making a significant push into the sports broadcasting market, aiming to secure new audiences and expand its advertising revenue. The company is strengthening its position in sports content through an exclusive broadcast deal for world boxing champion Amanda Serrano's matches and partnerships with major sports leagues like the NBA and WNBA. This strategic move is designed to boost TikTok's market share amid fierce competition in the streaming landscape.

TikTok Lands Major Sports Content Deals: Boxing and Basketball

TikTok is setting its sights on the sports broadcasting market, securing key content in boxing and basketball to capture fan attention and drive platform growth.

The platform will exclusively live-stream the title defense of boxing champion Amanda Serrano, known as 'The Real Deal.' The Puerto Rican featherweight champion boasts an impressive record of 49 wins, 4 losses, and 1 draw. Serrano is affiliated with Most Valuable Promotions (MVP), co-founded by Jake Paul and Nakisa Bidarian. Her championship bout against Lucrecia Manzur, scheduled for August 21 in Temecula, California, will be broadcast exclusively live on TikTok.

In addition to boxing, TikTok is enhancing its basketball content through partnerships with the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). Leveraging 'TikTok GamePlan,' a comprehensive suite of products already utilized by MLB and FIFA, the NBA and WNBA plan to discover new audiences among TikTok users. According to TikTok, searches for 'NBA' and 'WNBA' on the platform have increased by 30% and 15% respectively since early 2026, indicating strong interest in basketball content. This collaboration will also grant TikTok creators access to highlight reels from major events like the NBA All-Star Weekend.

Strategy for Boosting Viewership and Ad Revenue

TikTok's intensified focus on sports content is a strategic decision to boost viewership and secure a larger share of the highly competitive live sports broadcasting market. Analytics suggest that platforms featuring live sports packages tend to attract more traffic. Through its boxing and basketball content, TikTok aims to expand its presence in the streaming market.

This strategy also creates synergy with TikTok's advertising model. The platform's 'Pulse Premiere' ad product is designed to bring brands closer to major events that generate significant social media discussion. As part of its agreement with the NBA and WNBA, TikTok will offer Pulse Premiere products tied to the basketball leagues, which is expected to create new opportunities for both sports fans and advertisers.

Enhancing Engagement with Sports Fans

TikTok asserts that these partnerships highlight the platform's crucial role in how sports fans discover and engage with basketball. Rolo Goldstuve, TikTok's Global Head of Sports, stated that as the NBA and WNBA share game highlights, creators and fans can participate in real-time conversations about key moments. He added that TikTok GamePlan directly connects this discovery to broadcast viewing, providing fans with a direct path from their feeds to the live broadcast.

Jake Paul and Nakisa Bidarian, co-founders of MVP, also emphasized their vision: "From day one, MVP has challenged the traditional boxing model, seeking new ways to give athletes their biggest moments and opportunities, and to bring the sport to fans worldwide." They added that collaborating with TikTok to present the first championship boxing event on TikTok LIVE is another example of their commitment to growing boxing viewership and increasing accessibility to world championship matches.
