Music streaming giant Spotify is set to introduce 'AI Persona' labels for accounts that upload artificial intelligence (AI)-generated music. This initiative aims to clearly differentiate AI artists from human creators, providing listeners with transparent information and ultimately improving their overall user experience on the platform.
Introducing AI Persona Labels and Recommendation System Changes
Spotify plans to implement 'AI Persona' tags for accounts uploading AI-generated music starting in mid-September. Accounts carrying this tag will be automatically excluded from Spotify's editorial recommendation lists and algorithm-based suggestions. The company stated that listeners have clearly expressed their reluctance to encounter profiles that appear human, only to discover they are AI-generated personas. The 'AI Persona' badge will serve to inform listeners that an artist's identity may have been created by AI and does not represent a real person.

Prior to the full rollout of the labeling system, uploaders of AI-generated content will have an opportunity to voluntarily disclose their profiles. Spotify has indicated it will take enforcement action against those who fail to comply, and plans to proactively review artist profiles to identify accounts using realistic AI-generated images. In the future, a feature will be added allowing listeners to directly report undeclared AI accounts.
Protecting Human Creators and Bolstering Platform Trust
Spotify emphasized that this measure is part of its broader effort to prevent "AI slop" – spam and low-quality content – from degrading the platform experience. The company has already removed approximately 75 million spam tracks over the past 12 months. In April of this year, Spotify introduced 'Verified' badges for human artists to help distinguish them from AI uploaders. Despite these efforts, some listeners continue to voice complaints about AI-generated content appearing regularly in recommended playlists without proper disclosure.
Organizations like SlopTracker have highlighted the severity of the issue, claiming that around 49 AI music uploaders have siphoned approximately $2.5 million in revenue away from human musicians. Against this backdrop, Spotify is demonstrating its commitment to strengthening AI content management to build listener trust and protect the activities of human creators.
AI Music Creation Permitted, Transparent 'Personal Branding' is Key
Spotify has made it clear that it is not prohibiting the creation of music using AI generative tools. The company acknowledged that artists employ AI in their creative processes across a wide spectrum, but noted that the question of whether a profile represents a real human is something Spotify can definitively address. Thus, the 'AI Persona' badge focuses on the artist's public identity rather than the method of music creation.
This policy indicates that Spotify accepts creative activities that utilize AI technology, but aims to ensure creators transparently disclose their use of AI when building their "personal brand" and do not mislead listeners. Ultimately, the core of Spotify's new AI content policy is to clearly distinguish whether the entity presenting the musical output, even if AI technology is used, is a human or an AI.
